The Tennis Club history

1960s- Once the Irvine Coast Racquet Club, a 6-court facility, annexed by the Balboa Bay Club, a private club and playground to Hollywood’s Lauren Bacall, Johnny Carson, and of course our very own Newport Beach icon John Wayne.

1967- Renamed The Balboa Bay Racquet Club, it established itself as a premier tennis venue for professional and amateur tournaments in the 70s’ & 80’s with competitors like Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Billie Jean King, Jack Kramer and Arthur Ashe.

1991- Surprise visit from President George H. W. Bush to play doubles with our tennis club pros, Bob Ogle and Paul Jenkins.

2009- Affiliation with Balboa Bay Club ended and became The Tennis Club at Newport Beach,

The Tennis Club hosts World Team Tennis, featuring tennis super stars  Maria Sharapova, John McEnroe, and the Bryan Brothers.

2015 –  Sean Bollettieri-Abdali becomes the owner of The Tennis Club at Newport Beach, and transforms the club in 72 hours working around the dock with almost 60 workers. Just in time to surprise father figure and 14 time Tennis Hall Of Famer and Sports icon, Nick Bollettieri.  Nick continues to make multiple visits per year to The Tennis Club, offering tips to all members, including Pickleball members. 

 

2015 The Adoption Guild and Professional Tennis returns to The Tennis Club after 30 years. The Tennis Club becomes home to long list of tope notch events, such as the  Little Mo International Championship, USTA Junior Sectionals, USTA L2 Nationals, ITF Women;’s $25,000, Oracle ITA Fall Nationals. and many more tournaments.

2020- The Tennis Club becomes one of the premier private Tennis and Pickleball clubs in the Country. 

2020- Today, The Tennis Club is home to more than 150 UTR Tennis events, including 25 Pro Tennis Circuit $25,000, 55 UTR $6,000 Prize Money + Wild Card Tournaments, UTR Junior Match Play few days a week, and another dozen top notch Pickleball events.
